Captive Wi-Fi or VPN breaks AI Focus

Last verified: May 2026

Symptoms

The AI assistant goes silent — no nudges, no drift entries — despite obvious off-task behaviour. Rule-based blocking still works. The drift log is empty for the session.

Cause

The classifier calls FocusDragon's server. If the network blocks that endpoint (captive portal not signed in, corporate VPN with split-tunnel egress filtering, country-level block), every classification call times out. You won't see an error toast.

Test in 5 seconds

Open https://www.focusdragon.app in a browser on the same network. If the page doesn't load, your network is blocking us. If it does load, the issue is elsewhere — check Screen Recording permission instead.

Workarounds

  • 1. Sign in to the captive portal — hotel/airport networks need the splash-screen click-through before any third-party traffic flows.
  • 2. Switch to a personal hotspot.
  • 3. If you're on a corporate VPN, ask IT to allowlist *.focusdragon.app, or use split-tunnel so general traffic bypasses the VPN.
If you genuinely need AI catch on an untrusted network, run a quick rule-based block as a safety net at the same time.
