Troubleshooting

Safari closes after an update

Last verified: October 2026

What happened

When FocusDragon updates, macOS replaces the app bundle. Safari treats that as a reason to switch the FocusDragon extension off. Older FocusDragon builds sometimes read that as you turning the extension off to bypass a block, and closed Safari — which made it hard to turn the extension back on.

What FocusDragon does now

From 1.24 onward, FocusDragon tells the difference between an extension you turned off and one an update turned off. After an update it leaves Safari alone and asks you to switch the extension back on. Your blocked sites stay blocked via DNS either way; the extension just makes blocking more precise inside Safari.

Fix

  • Open Safari → Settings → Extensions.
  • Turn FocusDragon back on.
  • Set website access to Allow for all websites (and Private Browsing if you use it).
If you turn the extension off yourself while a block is active, Safari can still be closed — that path is still enforced. Only the post-update case is treated gently.
